This was our fourth time at Great Wood and that says it all! It's the sort of place where you just look forward to going back. Everytime we've been, the welcome from Don and Helen has been warm and friendly, and the lodges are immaculate and built to a very high standard. The fishing is superb (topped off this time with three 9lb+ carp), the fish are all in excellent condition and the area around the lodges is teaming with a variety of wildlife. Great Wood has to be given a "highly recommended"!

Wow, what an amazing place! The lodge is immaculate, and the fishing was even better - we caught over 500lb of carp in the week, and the biggest was a 12lb common, loads of mirror and ghost carp. Great food locally, easy access to York, and Don and Helen are a great couple. We have been using Hoseasons for quite a few years now but this is one of the best we've been to, my wife loves watching the birds and she wasn't disappointed here. The write ups and pictures in the brochure do not do this place justice, I can't wait to go back!

An idyllic haven of peace and tranquility - the perfect retreat to relax and unwind! The setting of the lodges is absolutely perfect for those seeking an 'away from it all' break. Four eco-lodges on the edge of a lovely lake, surrounded by woodland, with an abundance of wildlife right on the doorstep. The lodges are of a very high standard regarding luxury and comfort, and are extremely well maintained and equipped by the owners, Don and Helen - the most helpful and welcoming of hosts whose attention to detail ensures a wonderful time is had by all.
The village of Flaxton, which is approximately a mile and a half away, is 'picture postcard' pretty and has an excellent pub, The Blacksmith's Arms, which serves reasonably priced, delicious food. Many locals seem to dine there so booking in advance is probably advisable. There are lots of places to visit in the area and our only regret is that we were unable to stay longer. The North Yorkshire coast, York and Harrogate are all easily accessible and the beautiful estate of Castle Howard is just a few minutes drive away.

The accommodation and hospitality were excellent as usual. Wildlife was there in abundance and the fishing was marvellous with both of us catching lots of carp (commons, mirrors and a few ghosties) and even a 2 pound chub!
The hens were great fun and right little characters and we still don't know who adopted who! A lovely, peaceful holiday - we will be back.

This is a wonderful place to get away from it all. The lodge is first class and has everything you could possibly need. The location is perfect for getting around, should you wish to that is, and the fishing is very good. What more can we add to the comments already made about the owners Don and Helen? We had a hint of their hospitality before we even arrived, when Don rang us to give us information about what to bring, travel directions and the type of bait needed for fishing. When we arrived it was like visitng old friends, they are indeed a very special couple who want others to enjoy this wonderful place they call home. We cannot wait to return!

What a fantastic little gem! I booked this holiday last-minute and was a little wary of the reviews, thinking they sounded too good to be true, but Don and his Great Wood are magical, I think I have found my new favourite place! The lodge itself was immaculate - spotless and with everything you could possibly imagine you might ever need, down to the last rolling pin, scales - even an insect-repellant outdoor candle! It was also really good quality, solid and well-built from scratch by Don and his team, not a 'flat-pack' version - it is seriously first class, five-star 'eco' accommodation. The verandah was lovely, really large with home made wooden flower boxes, but best of all it meant we could sit outside whatever the weather without ever getting wet. We ate dinner with a glass of wine out there every night and saw endless wildlife including woodpeckers, bats, owls, greenfinches, swallows, coal tits, marsh tits, chaffinches, a buzzard and the 'magic squirrel'!
The scenery is beautiful - we didn't go off site all week but just took walks around the woods, saw the badger sett and the railway, visited Don's chicken family (and other assorted animals!), went fishing, had barbecues - bliss! And Don is such a character, and an absolute sweetheart, he has plenty of stories to tell! I'm already planning our next visit at Xmas!

We overlooked Great Wood Lodges because of the picture, but can I just say this lodge was like a 5 star hotel - well equipped, spotless, and the owners Don and Helen treated us like one of the family. The fishing was excellent and it was a perfect retreat!

This was a peaceful holiday and the fishing was great, Don who is the owner is very hospitable and makes you very welcome. This is in the middle of nowhere which was nice for walks and just chilling. Great place, just four cabins. Wild life all day and night.

When Don turned up and greeted us, it really was quite nice,

Outside our door, we loved the views, with chickens by the score,
with Cocky leading all the girls, he could have handled more,
It's lovely here, it really is, we had a real good time,

We have just spent a week at Great Wood Lodges. The lodge was extremely clean and equipped to a high standard!! The bedding towels etc which were included were clean and smelt lovely and fresh, and toilet rolls, washing up liquid, kitchen towels,were also included, so very much a home from home experience! The gift of tea, coffee, milk, sugar, eggs and wine were very much appreciated! The lodge was central so whether you lazed on the terrace, read, walked, fished, or went to nearby places, (Whitby, York, Scarborough) there was definitely something for everyone!!!! The fishing was fab, and much to my husbands dismay I did outshine him a couple of days!!!! Don himself was the perfect host and nothing was too much trouble! He certainly has created a wonderful place of peace and perfection! A week was definitely not long enough - many thanks!

Me and my partner have been twice now and we love it, will go again soon. It is a bit far from everything but we love that. Don who runs the great wood is very friendly and welcoming, there are only 4 lodges but all exactly the same except for the pictures in the lounge. The lodges are set around a big lake, great BBQ for in the summer. Don always gives us some free range eggs from his chickens and also provides milk, tea and coffee which makes you feel at home. In the lodge there is a full kitchen with dishwasher and even a washing machine, the bedrooms are quite big with an en suite and shower you also have another bathroom as well. We will go back next year.

We have been on several lodge holidays and this is our 4th visit to Great Wood and it's by far the best. The lodges are well designed, comfortable, well equipped and very clean. The welcome is warm and friendly and the environment is quiet and relaxing with plenty of varied and interesting wildlife. My husband loves the fishing.

From the second you arrive at Great Wood Lodges the stresses and strains start to drain away. You cannot help but be won over by the charm of the four eco lodges and their sublime location. With a genuine warm welcome from Don, the holiday was off to a cracking start. The lodge itself was meticulously built and didn't show any of the usual signs of holiday home lettings. It was warm, clean, well decorated and even had a welcome bottle of wine. There was a half dozen fresh free range eggs in the fridge and, if they were not in the fridge, they would still be warm having been laid the morning of your arrival by the on site chickens! The geographical location of Great Wood Lodges is perfect for a base for exploration - it is very close to York, Malton and Pickering, is well within reach of Scarborough, Harrogate and Knaresborough for a day trip, and is a stones throw from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which if you purchase the right ticket can take you to Whitby for Fish and Chips on the seafront. If exploration is not your bag, the lodges are ideal for relaxation - there's an abundance of wildlife who, sometimes, are willing to pose for photography, there's fishing on the Great Wood's own lake, or there are miles of surrounding countryside to explore at a pace all your own. Whatever you look for on a break, either short or long, if you can't find it here at Great Wood Lodges, then I would suggest you have expectations that are unachieveable!

We have just returned from a week long stay at Great Wood, our second visit after a long weekend at Easter earlier this year, and we were just as impressed with the accommodation, surroundings and welcome and attentiveness of Don and Helen. I have a medical issue which requires me to feed intravenously and my medical supplies are bulky and require refridgeration. Don liased with my healthcare company to arrange and take delivery of my food and an extra fridge on the day of arrival - nothing was too much trouble for him. The lodges are perfectly located for touring Yorkshires lovely coastal towns and stunning moors. We took one day to drive in a hired Caterham sportscar (details in the lodge) to Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby, then drove back inland to Goathland and across the moors down to Helmsley, what a stunning day!
If you just want to relax and take the day as it comes, the lodges are perfect - sit on your decked verandah overlooking the lake and surrounding woodland drinking a glass of wine. At night it is so dark and free from light pollution that if star gazing takes your fancy, the whole sky twinkles!! We will be back for a third visit - highly recommended

We stayed at Great Wood Lodges for a week at the beginning of August 2010 and wished that we'd booked for two weeks. The lovely, extremely clean, lodges have every conceivable thing that you could want for a home from home. Helen and Don are excellent hosts and were so attentive to our needs as they wanted us to have a relaxing break from the pressures of work and home. We would recommend this oasis of calm to anyone, and will be looking forward to booking again!

Great Wood is a small place of tranquility, minutes from the centre of York. We relaxed in the cabin with all the mod-cons we wanted, yet there was a huge list of widlife wandering past the veranda - its not often you get four deer stolling past within touching distance when you open the curtains in the morning. If you truly want to jump off the rat race for a sole enriching week or weekend, Great Wood is the place. You'll be wishing you were back there within a week of returning to the daily toil, I did!

The accommdation is absolutely first class, the setting was idyllic and yes, the quality of the organic eggs are everything people have said about them. If you like to watch the glint of the sunshine reflecting on the lake or hear the soft patter of rain on the top of the water and hear nothing else other than the slurp of you drinking wine then book, but only if you can beat us to it first!!! A warm, comfortable and clean, hand built Eco lodge set next to a well stocked Carp pool. Surrounded by woodland filled with wild birds which frequently feed at the feeders in front of the lodge supplied by Don and his wife Helen who made us most welcome. Fresh free range eggs are in constant supply from the free wandering hens. You could spend all day just taking in the peace and tranquility of the place, but not far away is York and the East coast resorts. Castle Howard is just a few miles away and is a must to visit. Beautiful villages are all around with plently of food pubs to choose from, and gentle walking country in the nearby Howardian Hills. A most enjoyable, relaxing and interesting week - thank you!

A wonderful park with fantastically built, decorated and furnished lodges set within the peace and quiet of woodland overlooking the tranquil fishing lake. What an absolute piece of heaven!! After a somewhat traumatic
2010 we really needed to fully relax and have some peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings. Don, (owner) has certainly developed something that is just that - from REAL fresh eggs on arrival, with milk and coffee. To just sit and watch the many varieties of wild birds coming to feed at the feeders was really special. Rest assured we will be returning, not because of afore-mentioned but also because Don makes you so welcome and his enthusiasm is so infectious.

My husband and I have enjoyed a wonderful weekend in one of the four lodges available, all of which surround a beautiful lake offering a wonderful spectacle of both flora and fauna. The attention to detail is what makes these lodges so special along with the warm welcome from Don & Helen. Ideally placed for a walk into Strensall to pick up provisions or a trip to the local in Flaxton which provided good food at reasonable prices. If you want to get away from it all this adults only retreat is just the place to do it. There is no doubt we will be returning again soon.

An extremely spacious, clean, well decorated, well furnished, very comfortable lodge with the fantastic bonus of a hot tub. The staff were really helpful and friendly and offered lots of advice on places to visit and eat etc. Situated right on the river it was very peaceful and relaxing and a perfect place to be, and to explore local attractions. Lots of places to visit (particularly Fountains Abbey, Ripley Castle, Blymore icecream parlour and many more) all with a maximum drive of approximately 20 minutes. Everything was perfect and we can't wait to visit again!

"Great Wood is an ideal location set between the historical town of York and the beatiful coastline of Whitby & Scarborough. The accommodation is of a very high standard. Overall a very enjoyable four day break and we will be back for our third visit next year".

A great holiday! A peaceful and quiet location, great for walking, fishing, or just sitting watchng the birds. Also within easy reach of numerous attractions, and there are plenty of country pubs close by. The owners are very friendly and helpful, and the lodges are clean, comfortable and have all modern comforts. This was our third visit so far and we are already planning our next!

This had a beautiful setting, not too many lodges and really helpful staff, who could not do enough for you, a really, really relaxing place to go. York is only 10 mins in the car, if, like us, you prefer retail therapy, this place is so handy for everything. We would recommend this place to anyone who likes peace and quiet but near the city as well.

Total tranquility, peace and quiet which is exactly as we wanted. Praise indeed for doing exactly what you said on the website - if Carling did holidays they would do Hoseasons!!

This was the cleanest and best maintained cabin we have ever stayed in, it exceeded our expectations, and Don and Helen are excellent hosts.
