The first thing that strikes you about Domaine de Dugny is the wide open space, especially alluring for lively youngsters. There are two sides to this parc – literally. One edge is dedicated to the pool complex and kid’s adventure playground, but move through the parc and you’ll discover the fishing lake, superb for messing around in boats. Domaine de Dugny is on the northern bank of the Loire, between Blois and Amboise. The area is known for being tranquil, the quality of its wine and game – the locals live well off the land, and the best produce is sold at the large Sunday market in Amboise.

A delightful, family-run Castels site, in a peaceful rural setting opposite the River Loire. Camping L’Etang de la Brèche is five miles from the market town of Saumur. With an upmarket Country Club atmosphere the site is extremely well maintained by the owners. There are also spacious grounds for children to explore and a swimming pool complex with four pools surrounded by a pleasant sun terrace. Beautiful old stone buildings surround a courtyard housing a shop, oak-beamed bar and elegant conservatory restaurant. Local trains can sometimes be heard from the site. This area is famous for its excellent wine, grown on the banks of the Loire, and is also well known for its mushroom caves and troglodyte houses built into limestone cliffs. The zoo at Doué-la-Fontaine has many wild animals roaming free and is extremely popular with families.

A charming woodland campsite close to the Château de Chambord, arguably the most magnificent of all Loire châteaux. Set in the spacious grounds of an old stone manor house, the peaceful wooded surroundings make Le Château des Marais an ideal campsite for families with young children. The campsite retains the atmosphere of an exclusive country estate and features a great waterpark with waterslides, a brand new lazy river and a spacious sun terrace. The restaurant, take-away and shop have all been built of local oak to blend in with the surroundings. Some noise may be heard from the nearby road. The site is a five minute walk from the village of Muides-sur-Loire. Six miles away is the Château de Chambord, one of the most extravagant of the Royal palaces along the Loire. The forests and parks are perfect for walks, cycling and picnics. The beautiful Château de Chenonceau is probably the most famous and romantic of all the châteaux, only one hour’s drive away. You should also visit the medieval city of Tours with its fine Gothic cathedral.

The Zoo Park Beauval is a marvellous day out with ‘Bird of Prey’ and ‘Sea Lion’ shows.

The owners here will always give you a friendly welcome and you will find that this is an ideal parc for those families who like things ‘rustic’ and ‘traditional’. Having said that, La Grande Tortue has a small but pleasant restaurant and a choice of family or children’s pools. This small parc is set among shady trees just a short walk from the pretty village of Candé-sur-Beuvron, close to the River Beuvron but very much off the usual tourist trail, amid pleasant, rural surroundings. Even so, there are shops and restaurants close to hand and you’re well placed to explore all the popular châteaux: including nearby Chaumont with its enchanting tree-lined setting; elegant Cheverny and the Renaissance château of Blois.

Most importantly, the Loire is most famous for its many châteaux, two of which, Chambord and Blois, are close to hand.

Beyond the parc itself, you will find yourself right between Saumur and Angers, two of the Loire’s most celebrated medieval towns. Located just outside the sleepy village of Pierrefitte, and ‘off the beaten track’ Parc des Alicourts is a most attractive parc, where tall oaks cast pleasant shade over the pitches in a tranquil forest setting that’s well away from main roads. An incredibly spacious ‘Castels’ parc famed for its wonderful grounds and air of complete relaxation. The first thing that will strike you about this superb parc is the wonderful space and openness of the grounds. There are simply acres and acres for you to relax in and for the children to explore. The facilities are excellent too, including an impressive pool complex with waterslides and a separate pool for youngsters, not to mention the superb play area. The family proprietors are your hosts in the attractive bar and restaurant, and their personal approach is much in evidence throughout. The location is ideal for exploring, with l’Etang de la Brèche and many outstanding châteaux within easy reach. While you’re here we would particularly recommend visits to mighty Chinon and the very beautiful Azay-le-Rideau.
